OK, Teri stumbled across MedMob as she was looking up stuff to do in DC tomorrow on Easter Sunday. Basically, there are going to be a whole bunch of people meeting up in various cities across the US to meditate simultaneously, i.e. synchronous “meditation flash mobs.” The MedMob website has this to say about their mission:
“Our intention is to create an environment for people from all walks of life to come together in meditation. By exposing people to meditation through public display of meditation and sending positive intentions out into the world we can lead by example. Simple acts can stimulate major paradigm shifts in thinking.” – MedMob.org
This is probably the greatest idea that I have ever heard of! Why has it taken so long for this to happen? It takes the idea of the sangha – the family whom we meditate with always – and takes us out of our quiet little spaces to put us in the milieu of the general public. To me, it’s a fantastic experience for both us and them. We get to shut up and listen and watch and observe what others are doing. While they are exposed to the concept of meditation in its’ genuine immediacy, instead of through media images which exotify and new-age-ify the concept of inner inquiry and mindfulness. From their website, you can find links to MedMob’s in your city, but for any of my DC homies, here’s the link to ours.
I know it’s short notice, but I hope that you can join me – either at a MedMob in my city, your city, or at your own sangha, from your apartment, from wherever you are at 12 noon tomorrow (don’t worry about the time difference – the vibes will rotate with the earth ;) ).
Here’s to rotating with the earth!
